Global Scholar Certificate Proposal
In order to best prepare Illinois students for career and citizenship, they must learn to navigate and achieve in an increasingly competitive and globalized world. The proposed Illinois Global Scholar Certificate responds to a growing body of research and data that suggests future careers will depend heavily upon the ability to work and collaborate in multiple cultural contexts. As a complement to recent initiatives such as STEM, CCSS, and the partnership for 21st Century Skills, the Global Scholar Certificate aims to recognize, on the state transcript, students who have attained global skills and knowledge through academic coursework, culturally-immersive community service, and a reflective capstone project.
Because individual school districts will determine which courses have significant global focus, no changes to existing curriculum will be needed to implement the certificate. Moreover, the certificate will not be mandated and thus schools may choose to adopt it based on the needs of their students. The time has come to reward Illinois students for achieving the skills and knowledge that will be crucial to succeeding in a rapidly changing, globalized world. If you would like a better future for Illinois students, and would like to begin a movement to recognize global competence in all states, there are several ways you can help...
